Crypto Becomes Most Muted Topic on X Due to AI-Generated Spam
Crypto has become the most-muted topic on X since the platform launched its snooze feature, with AI-generated spam and InfoFi posting likely driving users to tune it out. According to Nikita Bier, X's head of product, crypto has topped the list of most-muted topics ahead of politics, the Iran conflict, sports, and business and finance.
The snooze feature, which lets Premium subscribers hide topics from their For You feed for 24 hours, was launched on April 22. This move was aimed at curbing the wave of low-quality content that has increasingly plagued the platform. Crypto content on X has come under growing scrutiny, with the platform changing its API policies in January to cut off apps that paid users to post.
Crypto market sentiment remains subdued, with the Fear & Greed Index sitting at 29, or in “Fear” territory. Google Trends data tells a similar story, with worldwide search interest in crypto trending sharply lower since peaking in early 2026. The decline in interest is reflected in terms like “crypto,” “cryptocurrency,” and “Bitcoin,” which have all seen a decrease heading into April.
X has also launched Smart Cashtags, allowing iPhone users in the US and Canada to view real-time price charts for stocks and crypto, including Bitcoin, Ether, and XRP, without leaving the app. This move is seen as an effort to improve the user experience and provide more valuable content to users. However, the issue of AI-generated spam remains a major concern for the platform.
The crypto community has been critical of X's handling of the issue, with some arguing that the platform's algorithm is unable to distinguish between legitimate accounts and AI-generated spam. The debate highlights the ongoing challenges faced by social media platforms in balancing the need to provide a positive user experience with the need to allow for free and open discussion.
