US Seizes $500 Million in Iranian Crypto Assets
The United States has seized nearly $500 million in Iranian cryptocurrency assets as part of a sweeping economic pressure campaign against Tehran, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. This amount surpasses the previously reported $344 million freeze, with Bessent outlining the scope of Operation Economic Fury, a campaign aimed at cutting off Iran's financial lifelines.
Bessent made these comments during an appearance on Fox Business, where he mentioned that retirement funds and overseas real estate held by Iranian officials are also being targeted. The $500 million figure is significantly higher than the $344 million in seized crypto assets previously disclosed, with stablecoin issuer Tether confirming it had frozen more than $344 million in USDT at the request of US authorities.
The actions taken by the US Treasury have put significant pressure on Iran's economy, with one of the country's largest banks collapsing in December and its currency falling 60 to 70% against the US dollar. The Treasury has also intensified pressure by ramping up sanctions across multiple fronts, including targeting a Chinese oil refinery and roughly 40 shipping firms operating as part of Iran's shadow fleet.
Iran has been considering alternative methods, such as charging ships Bitcoin tolls for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the country's economy remains under strain, with the US continuing to impose sanctions and freeze assets. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, with cryptocurrency playing a significant role in the economic pressure campaign.
